This winter has been pretty weird for most people. Here in Saskatchewan, it’s been really mild for our standards. Okay, we did have a short stint of -30C nights and a couple of good dumpings of snow but overall, it’s been a lovely winter so far.
One unexpected perk of this mild weather is that the right conditions are often present for the formation of ice crystals on everything. Hoar frost is such a magical thing to see in person. (According to Woodland Trust UK, the word “hoar” comes from Old English. The way the ice crystals form makes everything look like they’re covered in an old beard or white hair.)
