The last time I played my ukulele in front of a crowd, I was 11 years old. I was lucky enough to learn the ukulele in elementary school and was very angry when they decided that the program would only run from grade 4 to grade 6 instead of going all the way to grade 8. As the years after grade school went on, I picked up my old uke less and less.
The initial hipster interest in the ukulele seems to have created a larger interest in this adorable little instrument all around the world with groups popping up everywhere and it’s been amazing for me as it gave me a chance to play again. I had to relearn a lot (I learned D tuning ukulele whereas most groups now prefer C tuning) but I’ve really enjoyed playing in jam sessions every other week with the Saskatoon Ukulele Players
Recently, one of our members gave us the opportunity to perform at the senior complex he lives at. So, after a few rehearsals, a small group of us headed to McClure Place on November 6th to perform for an hour. It was my first time leading a group at a performance and I was crazy nervous. And yeah, messed up here and there. But luckily, we had an amazing audience and I’m very grateful with the patience my fellow ukuleles gave me. Here are a few photos from the night:
