The last few days has been rough for my family. I knew it was going to be tough though so, I thought I should start this period off with something joyful. And for me, there’s nothing more joyful for me than nature!
The pelicans returned to Saskatoon in mid-April, as usual. My first attempt to visit them a couple of weeks back turned into nothing but a wild goose chase…literally! But on a whim, I tried again on May 7th and got more than I expected. The river was full of these magnificent birds! With the South Saskatchewan River being so low, the pelicans staked out their hunting grounds on rocks all over the river as opposed to just hanging out in the flow of the weir.
I’ve seen many people getting dangerously close to the weir to grab their pelican pics but I was never completely sure about how they got there. With the shore so well exposed right now, I crawled under one of the railings and carefully walked down to the shore. (I want to be clear that I did NOT go past the warning signs and fence that are supposed to keep people from getting too close!) I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to get that close to these wonderful birds. I finally found the trail to the fishing posts and while walking up the path to get back to my vehicle, I was greeted by a few more cuties.
