Winter in 2018 started off nicely. A little cold snap but the temperatures were pretty nice for awhile. Unfortunately, I ended up with a nasty toothache so getting out to enjoy it was harder than it should have been. But if you saw my previous post, you’ll know that I ended the year with a lovely but short snowshoe around a near by park.
Predicting weather in Saskatchewan is a joke though and temperatures quickly plummeted…into the -40’s! And not just a for few days either. For several weeks, we were consistently below -30C. It’s pretty hard to fight for your sanity in that kind of weather but I caught the odd break and was able to stomp around a bit. The first such break in the new year let me take my snowshoes to Patterson Garden, a place I’ve absolutely fallen in love with and love even more now that I discovered how perfect of a place it is for snowshoeing.
By the end of February, temperatures once again got a little better and I tried another park in town, Kinsmen Park. It’s a beautiful park downtown in the winter but the cross country ski trails are frustrating to navigate around. It was still a great walk and I regret not making it back for another stomp.
My last snowshoe of the season came at the beginning of March. The melt hit the week after but I’m happy to have ended my snowshoeing on a good note at Pike Lake. Chronic pain issues have really hit me hard this year and made things more difficult than they should have been but despite not being as active this past winter as I would have liked to have been, I’m hoping that the rest of the year will bring about even great adventures!
