Anyone who’s ever visited Saskatoon in the summer and walked along the river bank will likely have seen a cute little riverboat chugging down the South Saskatchewan River. While we’ve had a boat here for many years, the Prairie Lily itself is a relatively new attraction. I remember being involved in a riverboat cruise concert maybe a decade ago on the old boat but I absolutely love the Prairie Lily. It’s a little bit bigger but a lot more comfortable and definitely a thing to do with any visitors you may have.
The cruise starts at the docks behind the old Mendel Art Gallery. We did the 4 pm cruise which is about an hour long. It took us upstream under the University Bridge, past the Bessborough, under the Broadway Bridge, past RiverLanding, and past the Victoria Boathouse. We turned to head back before the Gordie Howe Bridge.
The first time I went on the Prairie Lily, it was a party event and I was on my own so all I had was my dinky little cell phone. This time, I made sure to have my DSLR because even though many of the views we saw from the Prairie Lily are familiar to me as a kayaker on the river, I felt a lot safer bringing my camera on the riverboat instead of my little bitty kayak! Here are some of my photos:
This excursion was a real treat for me and my family. It was really nice to sit back, enjoy the view, learn some local history, and most importantly, be able to share it with the people in your life. A definite two thumbs up!
