The arrival of pelicans in Saskatoon has become a big annual event. Usually, around mid-April, these big white birds land in the South Saskatchewan River at the weir and all Saskatoonians breathe a collective sigh of relief; it’s one of our favorite signs that spring has truly arrived.
All summer long, pelican watching is practiced by those wandering around the river. I’ve been down to the weir a few times already but I finally remembered to take my DSLR and 70 – 300 mm lens with me. Here are a few of the pictures I took. (Note the cormorants – the funny black birds that hang around the weir as well diving far deeper than the pelicans and sunning themselves on the shore.)
