The Toon Town Big Band was invited to play at the University of Saskatchewan Ballroom Dance Club’s annual Christmas dance, Mistletoes on November 24th. I have to admit that although I was quite nervous about it at first, it turned out to be an absolute blast. I don’t think that I’ve ever played to hard or so well as I did on Saturday. In fact, I think everyone was at their best. Yes, we made a few big boo-boo’s but with the quality of musicianship in the band, we covered it up quite well (which is something that I’ve always appreciated about this group.)
But beyond the music, it was a wonderful chance to see some real ballroom dancing up close. Some of the best dancers in the province were there and it was an experience to watch them. Perhaps some of my fascination comes from the fact that I can’t dance myself but I think that it’s also due to the fact that it’s a chance to see (and hear) how two art forms collaborate so nicely. Sure, you can have music without dance but to see people being able to use your sound to move is beautiful. And it certainly brings a different type of energy to a performance that wouldn’t otherwise be there if you’re playing for a more static audience.
Obviously, I couldn’t spend too much time watching since I actually have to read the music to play it let alone, take pictures while playing. But, a half hour was set aside for some demonstrations with recorded music so we had a chance to just sit an watch…and take pictures! Unfortunately, I can’t remember which dance was which since I’m not a dancer but here are a few shots:
The last demonstration was something special though. As soon as I saw the dancers lined up and ready to come on, I knew I had to take a video clip of it. Very cool!
And one last thing. A huge thank you goes out to the U of S Ballroom Dancing Club for this wonderful opportunity!
