Ice & Bronze

Wintershines is once again upon Saskatoon!  I can’t honestly say though that this is a festival that I totally understand, but that’s probably because I tend to go to check it out in the middle of the day when there isn’t much going on.  Most events, I believe, are in the evenings and weekends, but that’s just too much chaos for me.  However, when trying to decide where we should meet for lunch, I suggested to my friend that we could go to the Farmer’s Market and see what was up for Wintershines and that’s exactly what we did today.

For the most part, what you see mid-day is just the ice carvings from the competition that I assume was held on the opening weekend.  There’s also supposed to be some ice skating, sledding, and snowshoeing which tend to be taken over by schools during day hours.  The mild winter this year has wreaked havoc with some of the festival frivolities since the snow and ice are definitely melting away.  I’m glad I saw the sculptures when I did!

Unfortunately, I didn’t have too much time to spend wandering around that part of River Landing to take pictures and I definitely didn’t want to hold up my friend either, but I couldn’t resist taking a few quick snaps of some of the statues in the area.  I’ll be heading back soon and revisiting them as well as others in the city, but there’s just something so fascinating about these bronze people.
