Forestry Farm Follies

After a crazy cold couple of months, March came in with the perfect melt – not too fast, not too slow. With the snowshoes put away but the snow not completely gone, my adventure activity of choice became walking and what better place is there for walking than the zoo!

The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo is not far from my home. As a kid, my friends and I would often roam the grounds. Over the years, things have really changed. The park has lost a lot of their trees and birds and despite a shiny new entrance, the zoo is clearly struggling. It’s quite sad to see but considering the fact that the city never really seem to support the Forestry Farm, I’m going to do enjoy the animals as much as I can while they’re here!

The timing of my visit wasn’t perfect. Apparently, lunch time for humans means nap time for animals. Quite a few were still hiding in their dens but those who were out took the time to do their napping in the sun.

The herbivores, on the other hand, were mostly eating and staring at us annoying humans who were busy gawking at their majestic but sometimes comical beauty.

We didn’t see too many birds. Some of the owls were missing. Perhaps just hiding somewhere sleeping? Or maybe tucked away elsewhere for the winter? The usual ducks, geese, and peacocks are rumored to have been sold off and their former winter home converted for someone else but at least I saw a few familiar faces.

I was super excited when I first heard that we were going to have a mob of meerkats visiting Saskatoon and they didn’t disappoint! Housed in the former winter home of the earlier mentioned waterfowl, the meerkats bounced around without a care in the world. It was so cool to see these little things close up.

Despite my concerns about the obvious issues the zoo is facing as well the excessive snoozing of some of my furry friends, I still had a wonderful couple of hours at the zoo. It’s was so great to be out in the fresh air taking pictures. My photo editing skills definitely need more work but I’m more than happy to go back and snap more pictures of my lovely furry floofs!
