Meeting A Marten

This year, so far, has been one of the craziest that I’ve ever had and not in a good way. Hopefully, I’ll be able to update this blog with those details soon but some of it is still a little raw. However, like to show off some of my recent photo work

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few months driving my parents to various appointments. It just happened that a couple of days after reports came out of the pelicans arriving in Saskatoon, I had to drive my mom to an appointment not far from the weir. So of course, I grabbed my camera and after dropping her off, I headed to the fishing piers near the CPR Bridge.

As I walked down to the riverbank, I was greeted by a couple of Canadian Geese on the trail blocking my route. I wasn’t too angry though as there were no pelicans to be seen. So I crouched down and started taking pictures of the lovely couple.

When I finished, I turned around to see who else was around. I was greeted with the inquisitive, and probably very hungry, face of…well, I’m not even sure what he was. Something from the weasel family, I assume. A marten, maybe? Whatever he was, he was dang adorable! The poor geese didn’t think so though. After chasing him to try to get a picture, he disappeared in the rocks so I decided to go back to shooting the two geese.

Shortly after though. one of the geese started throwing a hissy fit and I realized that the marten was trying to get after the geese. Needless to say that he ran away but not before I managed to snap a few more pics. I really need to work on on my action shots!

The geese got fed up with me pretty quickly after that and waddled off into the water. Still no pelicans but it was fun watching these two try to bathe. Ill definitely be practicing a fast shutter finger this year if I’m going to get the kind of photos I want!

All photos taken on April 10, 2024 with a Nikon D7200 with a Sigma 70-200mm lens.
